How to use a Tesla referral code

There is no code box to type into. The referral travels with the link, and timing matters.

The short version

  1. Open an owner's referral link before you start configuring.
  2. Configure and place your order in that same browser session.
  3. Confirm the referral shows on the order before you pay the order fee.

Why there is no code field

Most stores give you a promo box at checkout. Tesla does not. A referral is attached when you arrive on Tesla's site through an owner's link, and it rides along while you configure. That is why the order of operations matters: if you configure first in one tab and open the referral link afterwards in another, the order you place may not carry it.

Doing it properly

Start from the link. You should land on a Tesla page that names the referring owner and describes the current benefit. If you do not see that, the link did not register, so go back and open it again rather than pressing on.

Stay in one browser. Switching from phone to laptop, or from a regular window to a private one, can drop the referral. If you need to switch devices, open the link again on the new device first. Ad blockers and strict tracking protection can also interfere, so consider pausing them for the order.

Check before you pay. The order summary should mention the referral benefit. This is the moment to fix it, because once an order is placed Tesla has generally not allowed a referral to be added afterwards.

If you order in a store

Orders placed with a Tesla advisor can still use a referral. Tell the advisor before the order is entered and have the link ready on your phone. Afterwards, check the order in your Tesla account and confirm it is there.

If it did not apply

Contact Tesla through your account promptly. There is no guarantee, and the program terms give Tesla full discretion, but your chances are much better within a day of ordering than at delivery.

Things that do not qualify

Referral benefits have generally applied to new orders only. Used inventory, order changes, and existing orders typically do not qualify, and eligible products change from one version of the program to the next. The current terms on Tesla's site are the only authoritative source.
